The J.J. Band (comprising musicians from the former Les Croque-morts and Les Babs Et Les Babettes) started out around 1966 as backing band for soul duo Jess & James, after whom they were named. The duo and their band became resident artists in Brussels club Les Cousins and ended up recording one album and a handful singles together. It was in this club that they were discovered by singer Jimmy Frey who invited them to perform on his eponymous album. In 1968 Jess & James and The J.J. Band went their own ways, with the band members wanting to play more jazz-rock and soul-jazz oriented music. They released two more albums, which didn’t meet with the hoped for success. In 1971 they recruited singer Leslie Kent and changed their name to Plus, eventually recording one more album under that moniker. (And see also 1969’s The free pop electronic concept — A New Exciting Experience which featured members of Jess & James and The JJ Band.)
